What does 2 Timothy 3:16 mean?

2 Timothy 3:16 is the key verse for understanding what Christians believe about the Bible itself. Paul wrote this to his young protégé Timothy, likely as one of his final letters before his execution in Rome.

"All Scripture" — Paul primarily refers to the Old Testament (the New Testament was still being written), but the principle extends to all canonical Scripture. "All" is comprehensive: not some Scripture, not the parts you prefer, but all of it.

"God-breathed" (theopneustos) — this is a unique word, appearing only here in the entire Bible. It means Scripture is exhaled by God. The metaphor is of God speaking — His breath carries His words through human authors. It does not mean the authors were mindless scribes; it means God's Spirit guided them so that what they wrote accurately conveys what God intended.

"Useful for teaching" — Scripture provides positive instruction about God, humanity, salvation, and how to live.

"Rebuking" — Scripture identifies what is wrong. It confronts error, sin, and false belief.

"Correcting" — Scripture shows how to get back on track. It does not just identify problems; it provides restoration.

"Training in righteousness" — Scripture disciplines believers toward maturity, like an athlete training for competition.

Notice the progression: teaching (what is true) → rebuking (what is wrong) → correcting (how to fix it) → training (how to stay on course). Scripture covers the full cycle of spiritual formation.

The doctrine of inspiration does not claim the Bible fell from the sky. It claims that human authors, writing in their own styles and contexts, were guided by God's Spirit to produce exactly what God intended.
