What does the Bible say about gossip?

What counts as gossip?

Gossip is sharing information about someone — true or false — in a way that harms their reputation or violates their trust. The Hebrew word rakhil (tale-bearer) and the Greek psithyristēs (whisperer) both emphasize the secretive, undermining nature of gossip.

Proverbs on gossip

'A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret' (Proverbs 11:13). 'A perverse person stirs up conflict, and a gossip separates close friends' (Proverbs 16:28). 'Without wood a fire goes out; without a gossip a quarrel dies down' (Proverbs 26:20).

Proverbs treats gossip as social arson — it ignites conflicts that wouldn't exist without it.

Paul's lists of sins

Paul includes gossip in his most serious catalogs of human brokenness. In Romans 1:29-30, gossips and slanderers appear alongside the envious, murderers, and God-haters. In 2 Corinthians 12:20, Paul fears finding 'quarreling, jealousy, outbursts of anger, factions, slander, gossip, arrogance and disorder' in the church.

James on the tongue

'The tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark' (James 3:5). James argues that no human can tame the tongue — it requires God's transforming work.

The alternative

'Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs' (Ephesians 4:29). The standard is not just avoiding harmful speech but actively choosing constructive speech.

Practical boundaries

• Would you say this if the person were present?
• Are you sharing this to help the person or to make yourself feel important?
• Is this your story to tell?
• Does this conversation move toward reconciliation or away from it?

Why it matters

Gossip destroys trust — the foundation of every relationship, family, and church. The Bible takes it seriously because words shape reality. 'The tongue has the power of life and death' (Proverbs 18:21).
